Top 10 Things to Do in Guam for Different Travelers
An island in Micronesia under U.S. territory, Guam was a battlefield during World War II, so no wonder it is more known for its military bases than its tourism. Nevertheless, do you know that there are many interesting things to do in Guam? From its tropical beaches to historical stone pillars and Chamorro villages — there’s so much to discover here!
Previously, I applied for a US tourist visa for a quick trip to Guam. Little did I know how beautiful the island was. Here, let me share some stuff to do in Guam for different travelers.
Top things to do in Guam for beach and nature lovers
1. Go for a swim at Ypao Beach
Ypao Beach is a public beach in Guam you can access for free. Personally speaking, this is one of the best tourist attractions in Guam for those on a budget. I recommend you prepare your swimming gear if you like to go snorkeling. The water is very clear, and there are a lot of corals and shells to admire. Otherwise, you could stroll around or have a picnic as you soak up the refreshing environment.
2. Take photos at Two Lovers Point
Two Lovers Point, also known as Puntas Dos Amantes, is one of the most iconic places to see in Guam. Be in awe of the breathtaking view of Tumon Bay with crashing waves 400 feet below you. At the park, you will see a huge brass monument of two lovers embracing each other. Legend says that these lovers fell in love during the war. As the woman was being promised by her father to marry a Spanish captain, it came to a point where she and her lover decided to jump over the cliff and never be separated again.
3. See marine creatures up close at the Aquarium of Guam
Get up and personal with underwater creatures at the Aquarium of Guam. Here, you can view marine life through the glass windows and observe the ocean’s diversity without getting wet. But if you want to experience ocean life as closely as possible, try their SeaTREK activity, but prepare to get soaked for this one. Also, don’t forget to buy tokens of your memories at their souvenir shop.
4. Escape the city and go on an adventure at Ritidian Point
Part of the Guam National Refuge Park, Ritidian Point is home to diverse fauna and flora. Located about 35 minutes north of Tumon, it is an excellent place to escape the city and surround yourself with nature. The park itself has three nature trails: 0.75-mile Latte Loop, 1.25-mile Nature Trail, and 0.5-mile Ritidian Caves Trail. After a long trek, you can cool off and swim at the Ritidian beach.
Top things to do in Guam for culture and history enthusiasts
5. Immerse in the local culture at Chamorro Village Market
The Chamorro Village Market is one of the most popular Guam tourist spots to experience the island’s traditions and, of course, taste Chamorro cuisine. Also, do not miss the opportunity to buy souvenirs here. These are cheaper and better than what the malls offer. You can find the market in West Tumon, which is a quick ride from Guam’s airport.
6. Learn about Guam’s military history at the Pacific War Museum
Discover Guam’s military history at the Pacific War Museum, just 20 minutes from Tumon westward. The island became a crucial military base for the Americans during World War II because it is located strategically in the Pacific. The museum features the American Navy, which fought against the Japanese in WWII. Initially, the Americans lost the land but regained their power from 1944 up to the present. The museum is truly one of the top Guam tourist attractions for history buffs.
7. Step back in time at Fort Nuestra Señora de la Soledad
Another fascinating stuff to do in Guam is to learn about Spanish history at Fort Nuestra Señora de la Soledad, which was built in Umatac Bay in 1810. The fort offers a stunning view of the bay, village, coastline, and mountain range, and is an excellent spot for Instagram-worthy photos.
Top things to do in Guam for shopaholics and foodies
8. Go shopping at Micronesia Mall
With over 100 shops, including boutiques and restaurants, Micronesia Mall is the biggest shopping mall in Guam. This is one of the top places to go in Guam for shopaholics. I recommend you check out Ross Dress for Less for quality but cheap items. In addition, you can taste excellent food at their Fiesta Food Court, where they also offer Chamorro cuisine.
9. Find branded yet affordable items at Guam Premier Outlets
Guam Premier Outlets (GPO) is where you can find branded items at outlet prices. They have a massive Ross Dress for Less store and other stores such as Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, Levi’s, Guess, and more! If you are looking for footwear, you have many options such as Payless Shoe Source, NineWest, Famous Footwear, and Sketchers. For souvenirs, check out the ABC store.
Honestly speaking, most of the pasalubong (souvenirs) I bought for family and friends came from Ross Dress for Less and ABC store.
10. Dine with a view at Tasi Grill
Enjoy a meal with a view at Tasi Grill of Dusit Thani Guam where you can elevate your dining experience with family and friends along their beachside grill. Their menu includes salads, appetizers, seafood, mains, sweets, and signature cocktails. This is one of the top places to go in Guam for foodies.
Although Guam is typically known for its military bases and historical sites, there is much more to the island besides its rich history. Explore the island and unveil the different things to do in Guam. While I have only experienced a few of these tourist attractions, I hope to return for a vacation and discover more of what the island offers.
